Two Worlds, One Highway
US-82 West out of Cloudcroft is the only road in New Mexico with a highway tunnel, and it earns its drama honestly: you leave 8,600-foot fir-and-aspen forest, wind down through orchard country in High Rolls and Mountain Park, and bottom out in Chihuahuan desert at Alamogordo. From there, US-70 runs west to the gypsum dunefield — the world’s largest — at White Sands National Park.
You can drive it nonstop in about an hour. You shouldn’t. The corridor is lined with overlooks, orchards, a century-old zoo, pistachio farms, and space-race history, and the dunes are at their best in late afternoon anyway. Go down slow, sled at golden hour, and know where you’re sleeping before you go — the park itself has no lodging.
Sleeping Near White Sands
The one thing to know up front: there is no lodging inside the park, and backcountry camping is currently closed for site rehabilitation. Every bed is outside the gate — here’s how to pick one.
Alamogordo — Closest Beds
Thirteen miles from the park entrance, Alamogordo is the practical basecamp: national-brand hotels line White Sands Boulevard (Holiday Inn Express & Suites among them) alongside local motels. Book ahead on Full Moon Night dates — they fill the town.
Camping Nearby
With in-park camping closed, the closest developed campground is Oliver Lee Memorial State Park at Dog Canyon, south of Alamogordo — desert-oasis sites below a serious hike. Lincoln National Forest campgrounds up the hill trade proximity for cool mountain nights.
On the Corridor
Split the difference: the bright, budget-friendly Cloudcroft Hostel near High Rolls Mountain Park sits mid-corridor with private rooms and dorm beds, and the family-run Dusty Boots Motel & Cafe on James Canyon Highway offers sixteen individually themed rooms and an on-site cafe.
