History, character, and mountain air

The Lodge at Cloudcroft is a historic mountain inn-resort hybrid where the main value is atmosphere. The official site sells individuality, antique furnishings, fireplaces, chandeliers, views, and history rather than brand-standard uniformity. Local reporting describes the property as one of the centerpieces of Cloudcroft’s civic and tourism life.

It works best for couples, golfers, wedding guests, history-minded travelers, and weekenders who want to build a stay around the property itself. If you want a memorable Cloudcroft weekend built around place and character, this is the strongest single property in town.

If you want modern hotel predictability above all else, The Grand Cloudcroft Hotel or a cabin rental is the better fit. The Lodge is a place where character carries the room, and where rooms vary by category.

History and significance

1899–1901

The resort project was established in 1899. The original log-constructed Lodge reached completion in 1901, creating a mountain destination for railroad-era travelers.

1909–1911

The original Lodge burned in 1909. The rebuilt Lodge reopened on its current site in 1911 — the building that still stands today, more than a century later.

2015 to present

Lanna and Joe Duncan have owned and operated The Lodge since March 2015 through New Mexico Adventures, LLC. They’ve invested in restoring the property and its civic role.

One of the defining structures in Cloudcroft. The Lodge is a key venue, emotional anchor, and centerpiece of the town’s civic and tourism life, per Cloudcroft Reader’s 2024 feature.
