Summer 2026 at a Glance
Summer is Cloudcroft's busiest, best season. While El Paso and the Tularosa Basin bake past 100°, the village stays in the 70s, and the calendar fills with festivals, markets, and mountain events nearly every weekend from June through August. This field guide rounds up the dated happenings, where to swim, the summer camps, and the galleries worth a stroll — the practical "what's on right now" companion to our evergreen Summer in Cloudcroft overview.
The cool-escape pitch: At 8,676 feet, Cloudcroft runs 20–30° cooler than the desert below. Mornings are sunny and clear; afternoon monsoon storms roll through July through September and usually clear by evening. Pack layers — nights drop into the 40s and 50s.

Cooling Off & Swimming
Swimming options on the mountain are limited and change season to season. Here's where things stand for summer 2026.
Pools, summer 2026: The Timberon Community Pool is closed this season due to a funding shortfall. The Grand Cloudcroft Hotel opens its pool to non-guests on Sundays, noon–2 p.m. Call ahead to confirm hours and any fee before driving out.
Art, Galleries & Makers
Burro Avenue and the streets around it are dense with galleries, studios, and makers — an easy, shaded way to spend a monsoon afternoon. A sampling worth a stroll:
Samantha Odom Art
A working artist's gallery on Burro Avenue showing original paintings and prints.
The Little Gallery
A compact gallery of local and regional work — small space, well-curated.
Aspen & Ivy
A Burro Avenue stop mixing art, gifts, and home goods in the heart of the village.
Off the Beaten Path
An eclectic shop just off the main drag with art, finds, and oddities worth a browse.
Burro Street Trading Post
Hand-carved goods and artisan pottery alongside Western gifts and souvenirs.
Osha Trail Depot

Plan a gallery walk: Hours vary by shop and many keep weekend-leaning schedules in summer. For the full picture, see our guide to shopping in Cloudcroft.
Summer Camps & Retreats
The mountains around Cloudcroft host seasonal camps and retreats through the summer.
Camp Mary White: A rustic, girls- and women-only outdoor camp near Mayhill, offering hands-on nature programming. Backed by a nonprofit friends group, it runs summer camp sessions for youth and women's retreats. Check the camp directly for 2026 session dates and registration.
Summer Practicalities
A few things that make a Cloudcroft summer trip go smoothly.
Altitude
At 8,676 feet, take your first day slow if you're coming from sea level or El Paso. Drink extra water and expect to feel the thinner air on the first hike.
Monsoon Afternoons
July and August bring brief but intense afternoon thunderstorms. Do outdoor plans in the morning and always carry a rain layer on the trail.
Book Ahead
Summer is peak season and Fourth of July weekend sells out first. Reserve lodging weeks in advance, especially for festival weekends.
Gas & Supplies
Options in the village are limited. Fill the tank and stock up in Alamogordo before the climb up US-82, and keep cash on hand for small vendors.
Sun Protection
The sun is intense at altitude even when the air feels cool. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses go a long way on a summer day in the pines.
Cool Nights
Even in July, evenings dip into the 40s and 50s. Bring a fleece for outdoor dining, festivals, and stargazing after dark.
Plan Your Summer Escape
Pick a festival weekend, book a cabin in the pines, and trade the desert heat for 70s and starry nights. The hardest part is choosing a weekend.
