Plan your Cloudcroft escape.

First-timer or repeat visitor — here's how to think about a trip up the mountain.

When to come

Summer (June–August)

Cool air at 8,676 ft when the desert below is over 100°F. Peak crowds, the most events, and the longest daylight on the trails. Book lodging early.

Fall (September–October)

Golden aspens, fewer crowds, and the strongest weather window of the year. The village quiets down without going dark.

Winter (December–February)

Snow on the trees, the Mountain Christmas Village in mid-December, and the ski hill seasonally open. Bring layers and watch road conditions on the climb up.

Match the trip length to the trip

Cloudcroft rewards a slower visit. The village is small enough to feel known after a day, and the forest around it is large enough to keep giving you new places to be for a week. The right length depends on how far you're driving and what you want to come home with.

Day trip

Possible from Alamogordo or El Paso, but you'll feel rushed. Best for a single hike and a sit-down lunch in the village before heading back down.

Two nights

The minimum to settle in. One full day on a trail, one slower day in the village — coffee, a long lunch, a wander through the shops.

Three or four nights

The sweet spot. Time for a longer trail, a slow restaurant meal, and at least one side trip down to White Sands or out to the basin.

What to lock in first

Lodging first

Marquee weekends — Christmas in July, Labor Day, the Mountain Christmas Village — sell out lodging first. Book early. Start with the stay guide.

Reservations for fine dining

Eighteen99 and a few others reward booking ahead, especially on weekends. Most casual spots are walk-in, but the marquee dinners aren't.

Pack for layers

At altitude, mornings can be 40°F when afternoons hit 75°F. A light jacket, a hat, and sturdy walking shoes are the minimum.

Fill the tank in Alamogordo

There's gas in the village, but it's usually cheaper at the base of the mountain. Top off before the climb up US-82.

Worth the drive while you're up here

White Sands National Park

35 miles, about an hour down the mountain. The most distinctive landscape in the region and an easy half-day from Cloudcroft.

Ruidoso

About 1.5 hours north. Larger, busier, and a different vibe — worth it if you want a contrast or have more than a few days.

Oliver Lee State Park

About 30 miles south. Dog Canyon trails, basin views, and a quieter alternative to White Sands for a half-day outing.
