Pull off US 82 in High Rolls, step inside, order, walk back to the car with bread. The whole transaction takes a few minutes. The sourdough is the reason you stopped, and the limited Friday-through-Sunday afternoon window is the price of admission.

What I'd order

Your first stop
"A whole sourdough loaf to take home. The bakery is named for the bread, the locals stop for the bread, and a loaf is the cleanest way to find out why."

Sourdough loaf · grab and go

A drive-day treat
"Whatever danish is in the case. Flavors rotate week to week, so you're picking the one that looks best the day you happen to be in High Rolls."

A danish from the rotating case

Stocking the cabin
"A loaf and a few pastries for the morning. If you're heading up to a Cloudcroft cabin and Friday or Saturday afternoon is on your route, this is your bread stop."

  • Travelers who like timing stops around small-batch baking

Practical notes

Hours, sell-outs & calling ahead

Posted hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 2 PM to 6 PM. Closed Monday through Thursday. Both Cloudcroft Reader and the bakery's Facebook page report the same window, so if you see those four hours, that's the bake.

Small-batch bakeries can sell out before posted close. If you're driving from out of town for a specific loaf or pastry, a quick call to (575) 520-8096 or a glance at the most recent Levain It Up Facebook post is the safest play.

Walk-up service, not a café

The owner-confirmed service model is walk-up only. You park, step inside, order, get your food, and head out. No table service, no extended café session, no espresso bar.

Plan it like a roadside bread pickup, then bring the goods back to the cabin or pair them with a coffee from a Cloudcroft shop on the way up or down the mountain.

The owners & the building

Levain It Up is run by Garrett Barnett and Steven Jackson. Cloudcroft Reader's January 2026 profile, "Rising to the Occasion: Levain It Up in High Rolls," frames them as transforming both the old building and their own lives through the bakery. As of April 2026, both are still running it.

That makes Levain one of the newer food businesses in the greater Cloudcroft market — closer in vintage to the recent wave of village openings than to the long-running Burro Avenue institutions.

Why it's a High Rolls stop, not a Cloudcroft one

High Rolls is the small mountain community on US 82 between Alamogordo and Cloudcroft, about 10 minutes down the mountain from the village. Levain belongs to that broader US 82 corridor rather than the in-village Burro Avenue or James Canyon Highway dining strips.

If you're already on US 82 — heading up from White Sands (35 miles away), or driving down toward the basin — Levain is on your route. If you're staying in Cloudcroft proper at 8,676 feet and don't plan to leave the village, you'll need to make a dedicated trip.

Online sales, website & ordering ahead

No standalone website is confirmed. Facebook is the bakery's primary online presence; Instagram (@levain.it.up) is also live. Online sales aren't confirmed, so plan to buy in person during the Friday–Sunday afternoon window.

If you want a specific item held, a phone call to (575) 520-8096 during open hours is your best bet. The bakery hasn't published a formal pre-order system.

Editor's take

"Levain is a roadside bakery in the best sense of the phrase. Small, specific, sourdough is the whole point, and the limited Friday-through-Sunday window keeps the operation honest. If you're driving US 82 on a weekend afternoon, it's worth pulling over for a loaf. If you're in the village all week, plan the trip — the bread is good enough that the ten-minute drive down the mountain isn't really a debate."
