A Mountain Village with Deep Roots

Cloudcroft was born from the railroad. In 1899, the Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway — dubbed the "Cloud Climbing Railroad" — carved a path from the desert floor up into the Sacramento Mountains, bringing timber workers and tourists to a cool mountain retreat at the top. The village quickly grew into a beloved summer escape, and the railroad's legacy still defines Cloudcroft's character today.

The Lodge at Cloudcroft, originally built as a railroad lodge in 1899 and rebuilt after a fire in 1911, remains one of the most iconic historic hotels in New Mexico. With its Victorian charm, panoramic views, and storied past — including a famous resident ghost named Rebecca — The Lodge is a destination in itself. Throughout the village, you will find echoes of Cloudcroft's railroad heritage in its architecture, street names, and the Mexican Canyon Trestle that still stands along US-82.
